This study aims to examine the representation of the "ideal woman" in the discourse of Nāmeh-ye Bānvān, one of the earliest women's periodicals published in late Qajar Iran. The central research question is: How does Nāmeh-ye Bānvān reproduce a new image of the Iranian woman in the public sphere by redefining the concept of the "ideal woman" through a fusion of traditional and modern discourses? To address this question, the study employs a qualitative historical-documentary research method combined with Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) inspired by Norman Fairclough’s theoretical framework. The research population comprises all published issues of Nāmeh-ye Bānvān (11 issues spanning the years 1299–1300 Solar Hijri), which have been comprehensively and systematically analyzed. Within this scope, selected texts were chosen through purposive sampling and analyzed using theoretical tools of discourse analysis, including metaphor analysis, semantic oppositions, mechanisms of foregrounding, and marginalization. The findings indicate that Nāmeh-ye Bānvān redefines the ideal woman through a hybrid discursive structure that simultaneously operates within both national and gendered identity frameworks: on the one hand, by embracing modern principles such as education, social participation, and conscious motherhood, and on the other, by rearticulating these concepts within Islamic-Iranian values while deliberately avoiding direct confrontation with traditional discourse. The originality of this research lies in its integration of Critical Discourse Analysis with the tradition of Iranian women's historical studies, as well as its systematic examination of Shahnaz Azad’s role as a key discursive agent in shaping this hybrid representation of the ideal woman.
