This study examines the role of the agentic Other manifested through non-playable characters (NPCs) in video games, demonstrating how these entities fundamentally contribute to the social and narrative organization of game worlds. Employing an interpretive-analytical approach and analyzing selected video games, NPCs were conceptualized as social actors who shape the game world through meaning-making processes, norm production, spatial boundary-setting, and the generation of directional mechanisms. The findings indicate that interactive narratives extend beyond functional components, as NPCs become carriers of rules, stabilizers of social order, narrative drivers, and representations of cultural patterns. The player’s experience of the game world is formed through encounters with these computational Others, and through both direct and indirect interactions with them, meaning, action, and structure are rendered intelligible. The analysis further revealed that NPCs play a foundational role in the architecture of interactive narratives, reinforcing the spatial, temporal, and semantic coherence of the game world. This research underscores the significance of the concept of the computational Other for understanding interactive narrative and world-building within the humanities, and it establishes a basis for developing new theoretical frameworks for examining non-human agency in digital environments.
