مسجد به مثابه فناوری شناختی: تبیین کارکردهای شناختی مسجد با روش تحلیل مضمون

چکیده
در دهه‌های اخیر، نهادهای فرهنگی و مذهبی نیز به‌عنوان فناوری‌های شناختی مؤثر بر ذهن و رفتار انسان در نظر گرفته شده‌اند. این پژوهش با هدف تحلیل کارکردهای شناختی مسجد، آن را نه فقط مکانی عبادی، بلکه «فناوری شناختی» بررسی می‌کند. روش پژوهش کیفی و مبتنی بر تحلیل مضمون است. داده‌ها از متون علمی، اسناد و مصاحبه با ۲۴ نفر از صاحب‌نظران علوم شناختی و نهاد مسجد گردآوری شده است. یافته‌ها در قالب چهار مضمون فراگیر: (۱) کاهش بار شناختی نامربوط و تنظیم توجه (پالایش میدان ادراکی، آرام‌سازی روان‌شناختی، نشانه‌گذاری ریتمیک زمان)؛ (۲) توزیع شناخت در شبکه اجتماعی (شناخت توزیع‌شده در جماعت، چارچوب‌های تفسیر مشترک، حافظه توزیع‌شده بین‌نسلی)؛ (۳) ارتقای فراشناخت و خودتنظیمی هدفمند (توجه و آگاهی آیینی، مهار تکانه و انضباط رفتاری، بازسازی معنوی مبتنی بر تنظیم هیجان)؛ (۴) مهندسی شناختی از طریق طراحی محیطی–آیینی (الگوسازی معماری و آیینی–تعاملاتی، برانگیختن تفکر تأملی و یادگیری جمعی) صورتبندی شدند. این چهار کارکرد در تعامل، سامانه‌ای شناختی–اکولوژیک تشکیل می‌دهند که ذهن و محیط را در چرخه‌ای از تنظیم متقابل پیوند می‌زند. نتایج نشان می‌دهد مسجد با این کارکردها، ساختار ذهنی و رفتاری انسان را شکل می‌دهد. پژوهش پیشنهاد می‌کند بازخوانی شناختی مساجد می‌تواند به بهره‌گیری بیشتر از ظرفیت‌های این نهاد و سیاست‌گذاری‌های فرهنگی و تربیتی نوین در جامعه اسلامی بینجامد. بدین‌ترتیب مسجد هم جایگاه عبادی خود را حفظ می‌کند و هم نهادی پیش‌برنده در ارتقای آگاهی شناختی، تنظیم ذهن و توانمندسازی اجتماعی خواهد بود.

The Mosque as a Cognitive Technology: Elucidating Cognitive Functions of the Mosque through Thematic Analysis

چکیده English

Introduction: In recent decades, the concept of cognitive technology has expanded beyond conventional technological tools to encompass cultural and religious institutions that actively shape human cognition and behavior. Among these, the mosque – traditionally perceived as a sacred space for worship – has received limited attention as a cognitive agent capable of influencing mental processes, emotional regulation, and social behavior. Recognizing the mosque as a form of cognitive technology offers a novel perspective for understanding its broader societal and psychological functions. This study aims to investigate the mosque not merely as a place of ritual practice but as an instrument for cognitive and behavioral modulation, capable of structuring attention, memory, perception, and collective awareness. Based on a rigorous thematic analysis and following a systematic recoding process to enhance integration and inductive power, the research reframes the mosque’s cognitive functions into four overarching themes: (1) reduction of extraneous cognitive load and attentional regulation; (2) distribution and extension of cognition across social networks; (3) enhancement of metacognition and goal directed self regulation; and (4) cognitive engineering through environmental ritual design.

Methods: The present research employed a qualitative design grounded in thematic analysis. Data were collected from three complementary sources: (a) a review of scholarly literature on cognitive psychology, cognitive technologies, and religious institutions; (b) document analysis, including historical texts, architectural guidelines, and community oriented publications related to mosques; and (c) semi structured interviews with 24 experts comprising cognitive scientists, religious scholars, and practitioners with in depth knowledge of mosque related practices. The thematic analysis followed a rigorous coding procedure: open coding to identify initial categories, axial coding to establish relationships among themes, and selective coding to synthesise the primary cognitive functions. To ensure credibility, triangulation of data sources, member checking with interviewees, and peer debriefing among the research team were implemented. In response to the peer review recommendation, the coding scheme was re examined to merge overlapping codes and achieve higher integrative power, resulting in four global themes instead of eleven scattered functions.

Results: The analysis revealed that the mosque operates as a multi layered cognitive technology structured around four integrated global themes:

1. Reduction of extraneous cognitive load and attentional regulation – This theme includes perceptual field purification (highlighting relevant stimuli, eliminating distractions, Qibla oriented direction), psychobiological calming (reduced arousal, anxiety, and rumination), and rhythmic time marking (daily/weekly ritual cycles, sacred time demarcation). These mechanisms jointly decrease irrelevant processing demands and facilitate sustained goal directed attention.

2. Distribution and extension of cognition across social networks – The mosque functions as a distributed cognitive system through shared cognition in congregation (collaborative learning, collective dialogue, emotional resonance), formation of common interpretative frameworks (shared ritual language, collective identity, in group/out group boundaries), and transgenerational distributed memory (ritual repetition, shared narratives, intergenerational memory). This theme aligns with theories of extended and distributed cognition.

3. Enhancement of metacognition and goal directed self regulation – The mosque promotes metacognitive awareness through ritual mindfulness (heartfelt presence, intentionality, continuous self monitoring), impulse control and behavioral discipline (adherence to etiquette, soft social monitoring, self restraint, behavioural programming), and meaning based emotional reconstruction (attributing meaning to actions, collective hope building, meaning based calmness). These practices strengthen executive functions and emotion regulation.

4. Cognitive engineering through environmental ritual design – This theme encompasses architectural modelling for cognitive navigation (movement orientation, spatial symbolism, visual order induction, sacred signposting), ritual interactional modelling (row formation, normative silence, ritual repetition, collective cooperation), and stimulation of reflective thinking and collective learning (raising religious social issues, activating contemplative thinking, connecting religious concepts to life challenges). The mosque thus acts as a cognitive scaffold that shapes behaviour and thought without requiring explicit conscious oversight.

Discussion: The findings suggest that the mosque operates as a holistic cognitive ecological system, not merely a collection of separate functions. The four themes are mutually reinforcing: reducing extraneous load frees resources for self regulation; distributed cognition enables collective metacognition; and environmental ritual engineering provides the material substrate for all processes. By integrating architectural design, ritual practices, and social interaction, the mosque actively engineers mental and behavioural patterns – a role that extends far beyond traditional worship. Recognising these capacities, policymakers, educators, and religious leaders can leverage mosques as strategic sites for cognitive development, mental health promotion, community engagement, and behavioural guidance. Moreover, adopting a cognitive technology perspective allows for the design of mosque based interventions that enhance learning, reduce cognitive biases, and strengthen social capital. Future research should explore quantitative assessments of these cognitive effects, cross cultural comparisons, and the integration of mosque design with evidence based cognitive ergonomics.

Conclusion: This study reconceptualises the mosque as a multi dimensional cognitive technology that reduces extraneous cognitive load, distributes cognition across social networks, enhances metacognition and self regulation, and engineers behaviour through environmental ritual design. These four integrated functions transform the mosque from a mere place of worship into a strategic infrastructure for mind brain culture interaction. Embracing this perspective not only preserves the mosque’s sacred role but also positions it as a forward looking institution for fostering cognitive awareness, emotional balance, and collective intelligence in contemporary Islamic societies.
