Although some research has been conducted on youth music trends in Iran in recent years, little has been done on underground music. This paper studies the explicit and implicit contents of underground lyrics. To do so, ten underground lyrics which were more popular at the time were selected and their sociological contents and implications were identified by quantitative and qualitative content analysis.
The findings infer that the lyrics of underground music are most often critical towards socio-cultural situations of Iranian Society. Also, the underground music has potential to deal with public sphere issues.
