The purpose of this study is to compare the intimate relationships between dependence and independence to the Internet among Islamic Azad University students in Tehran. The research population consisted of all students of Islamic Azad University of Tehran.
The sample size based on Cochran formula was 384 students and the sampling method was multi-stage sampling method. In order to compare the intimate relationships among the dependent and independent internet users in two groups of 200 people, the sample size increased to 400 people.
The measurement tool was the 20-question standardized "Internet Dependence" questionnaire by Kimberly Young (1996) and the 50-question "Intimate Relationship" Questionnaire by Treadwell and Kumar (1981). The findings of the research showed that the level and type of intimate relationships are different between the dependent and independent groups.
Concerning the overall aspects of intimate relationships, the aspect of closeness was different between dependent and independent Internet users. Also, the findings showed that there was a significant difference between the sharing of values and shared activities among dependent and independent internet users.
But there was no difference in the aspects of the mutual recognition and the emotional relationships resulting from the intimate relationships between the dependent and independent internet users
